Steel Katana - Differentially hardened
This
1070 steel katana from Konron forge is differentially hardened and does
show an unique hamonline.
After months of discussions,
tweaking and testing we finally have these wonderful swords in stock.
The blade itself is forged out of 1070 steel. After the forging process,
the hardening process of the blade can begin, where the blade is being
coated in a mixture of clay, ash, water, and other ingredients. Once the
coating process is done, the sword is heated again and once it has reached
750-800°C, it’s quenched in water.
Each sword in this
line has it’s own unique hamonline (created by the coating process)
and you won’t find 2 swords with exact the same one. The smith is
even going further and put a lot of time and effort in the coating process
in order to give each blade it’s own “soul”.
These swords are not
only beautiful but also functional as you can see in the video on the
bottom of this page. Cutting single and multiple tatami are no problem.
We even tested the ability of this sword by chopping wood ! Keep in mind
that this is just an extreme way to test swords and they’re not
made to chop wood ! If you like to chop wood, buy an axe…
The tsuka has a very
nice shape and does follow the curve of the blade. To guarantee more safety
, there are 2 bamboo pins (mekugi) holding the tsuka. All
of these swords does have an iron tsuba and copper fuchi&kashira and menuki.
